The Green Smoothie Revolution

I recently attended a living food demonstration at a local nutrition store. I have been doing Green Smoothies for some time now. So, I can attest to the many benefits. The Living Foods Demonstration was held by Rene Oswald, RN, APHN. The demonstration was very informative and inspiring for all those who attended. If your in the West Palm Beach area, these lecture/demonstrations are usually held every Tuesday evening at Nutrition S’mart. Here is a demonstration video of one of Rene Oswald’s lecture/demonstartions.

Eating Raw in Hartford, Connecticut.

I had been traveling to Hartford, Connecticut during the month of April. In my travel I try to find Raw Vegan establishments and then spotlight them for others to discover and enjoy. The energy and vitality of this cafe is wonderful. The staff is super friendly and very helpful.

The smoothies are to die for…..my favorite is “Tantric Love“, a combination of cocao, gogi berries, strawberries, banana, coconut, dates, and berry tea.

A Movement That Cannot Be Denied

Vegan and Raw vegan are popping up in all aspects of our daily lives. Upon reading the May/2008 issue of Muscle and Body Magazine, there was a very good article by Karen Oris titled “Meat-Free Muscle“. This article is about two elite vegan athletes, kettlebell expert Mike Mahler and UFC (Ulitmate Fighter Championship) star Mac Danzig. This further illustrates the idea of nutritionally rich foods and how they make us excel physically in addition to being the healthiest thing for us. (Meat-Free Muscle page1, Meat-Free Muscle page 2, Meat-Free Muscle page 3, Meat-Free Muscle page 4, Meat-Free Muscle page 5)

I am currently reading the book “The Thrive Diet” by Brendan Brazier, mentioned in this article. This book gives you a nutritional perspective when it comes to food consumption. This book is a definete read for anyone considering a vegan or raw vegan approach to health, happiness, and longevity. Here is but a quick excerpt from the book:

A calorie is defined as a measure of food energy. It might seem

logical, then, to assume the the more calories consumed, the more

energy our body is supplied with. Of course, we know this is not the

case, otherwise people with the highest energy would be those who eat

at fast food restaurants. By simply consuming more calories, we are

not guaranteed more energy. Many convential nutrition books

would have us believe that if we expend a certain amount of energy, it

can be quantified and replaced. They suggest that by simply adhering

to calorie counts, with no consideration of other factors, we can accu-

rately gauge the amount of food we need to consume to maintain low

body weight and high energy. But it doesn’t work that way.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Hope everyone has had a great Earth day. I, unfortunately, could not spend anytime outside since I had to fly. I started my day in Hartford, Connecticut and ended up in Miami, Florida. Both of these places had great weather for a day to celebrate the earth and all it’s goodness.

I just finished up a batch of “raw chocolate pudding“, which I intend to bring to work tomorrow. That’s if it makes it to the plane. I have a few co-workers intrigued, so to speak, about raw foods. I figured a raw chocolate treat was a good stepping stone. I’ve included the recipe for you to try. Hopefully, I can do a video demo of it in the near future, when I get a little time away from flying. This recipe uses young thai coconuts. I’ve also included a video on how to open them. This recipe calls for 2 cups of coconut meat, which is approximately 3-4 thai coconuts.

CHOCOLATE PUDDING

  • 2 CUPS COCONUT MEAT
  • 3/4 CUPS COCONUT WATER
  • 1/2 CUP PITTED DATES
  • 1/3 CUP AGAVE NECTAR
  • 1/2 CUP RAW COCOA POWDER
  • 2 TBS VANILLA EXTRACT
  • 1/4 TSP SEA SALT

Puree all ingredients in a hight speed blender until smooth. Refrigerate 1/2 hour to thicken.
